WHAT IS PHONICS?

Simply put, phonics is the first step in teaching children to read and write. It involves teaching the relationship between the letters and sounds of the English language. Children progressively learn what sound is made by individual letters and then by a combination of letters.

At St Margaret Ward, we follow the Rocket Phonics Scheme to ensure sounds are taught progressively.
They have produced this written guide to help parents.

We know for many parents and grandparents, phonics was NOT the way that they were taught to read at school. So, they are probably not aware of a lot of the jargon. This jargon buster should help .....
