Religious Education
At St Margaret Ward we follow The Vine and the Branches RE scheme of work. This resource is based on the Religious Education Curriculum Directory for Catholic schools, To know You more clearly.
Using The Vine and the Branches scheme, we aim to nurture the children’s relationship with God by placing Jesus Christ at the centre of all learning.
Rooted in Scripture and Catholic tradition, the scheme aims to help pupils grow in faith and understanding, enabling them to see how belief shapes their lives and relationships.
Through age-appropriate theological learning, prayer, reflection, and liturgical experiences, The Vine and the Branches seeks to support the spiritual, moral, and religious development of each child, encouraging them to live out Gospel values as active members of the Church and wider community.
Our aims:
- To proclaim and deepen knowledge of the Catholic faith - helping children come to know God, Jesus Christ, Scripture, the Sacraments, prayer, and the teachings of the Church.
- To support faith formation and spiritual growth - nurturing children’s relationship with God through reflection, prayer, liturgy, and moments of wonder.
- To help children live out Gospel values - encouraging love, forgiveness, justice, compassion, respect, and service in everyday life.
- To make links between faith and life - helping pupils understand how Catholic beliefs shape choices, behaviour, and relationships at home, in school, and in the wider world.
- To form moral conscience - guiding children to make informed, responsible, and loving decisions in the light of Church teaching.
- To foster a sense of belonging to the Church community - helping children understand their place in the parish, the school community, and the wider Catholic Church.
- To promote respect for other faiths and cultures - encouraging openness, dialogue, and understanding, while strengthening pupils’ own Catholic identity.
- To support the holistic development of the child - contributing to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, emotional, and intellectual growth.
Below is the long-term plan for The Vine and the Branches:
Parents and carers should be aware they have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE lessons. If you think you might wish to do this, please ask to speak with Mr Hughes (headteacher) or Miss Flynn (RE Lead).
